D A PENNEBAKER / BOB DYLAN
'don't look back'

BOB DYLAN
'subterranean homesick blues'

In the video for this song, Dylan holds up boards with words and phrases from the lyrics as as they are being played. They looked into filming it on a roof, in a garden, and finally decided on an alleyway near the Savoy, London. The appearance of the words is more rhythmic at the beginning as they are held up in perfect timing with the lyrics, but then they start to appear in the wrong order with random words and words that do not appear in the song at all.

The idea behind the video was to hold people's attention and then lead them astray by playing to their expectations / randomizing. It could be that they weren't listening to the song as they were recording it but I personally think that they made mistakes intentionally.

The film became the trailor for 'Don't Look Back', using superimposed text on white boards.

It has become a piece of iconic film, and the recognizable theme can be found in various other music videos / spoofs including

'curiosity killed the cat'
