ZINE SYMPOSIUM
'the ice cream factory'

I recently went to the Zine Symposium at 'The Ice Cream Factory' where there was a wide variety of examples of image and text working together / complimentary and contradictory. I also went to Handmade and Bound, where there were students from different Universities / Colleges selling their work. The majority of the work consisted of zines / fanzines / prints of image and image/text / handmade books / cards / stickers.

I got lots of ideas for progressing with my Illustration work, and saw lots of interesting examples of image and text working together in various formats.

END OF COURSE EXHIBITION

We have decided to have our exhibition in John Latham's 'Flat Time I-Io' (flat time house). It is a fairly small gallery with permanent artworks already integrated. We will need to think about the layout of our individual work / posters / flyers / facebook events etc.

How big would i want my work to be? Which wall would i prefer to show it / them on? Limited colour palette for the whole show or for individual works? We talked about having a specific theme for the show, but decided that 'image and text' as a subject was limiting enough, and it would be interesting to see what everyone made.

Our exhibition is going to be 20/01/11 / time yet to be decided but probably evening, as we are opening the elective shows. I would like to show either 2 A3 drawings or 1 A2 drawing, depicting the face / faces of a person (in a grid formation) mid-sentence / the images would imply text / speech.

There is a small area of garden space out the back of the gallery, but it will be pretty grim weather at that time of year (january), and no one has proposed any work so far that would be suitable for that space. It would change the atmosphere of the show as well if the door was constantly open. We also have to take into account that there will be a fairly large piece of ceramic pottery somewhere in the gallery, so it would be easier to play it safe and use the wall space available.
